From Street Food to Michelin Stars: The Savvy Women’s Guide to Safe & Spectacular Travel Dining

Let’s be honest – one of the absolute best parts of traveling is trying all those amazing local restaurants, right? But I know it can feel a bit overwhelming, especially when you’re exploring somewhere new. Don’t worry, I’ve got your back with some tried-and-true tips to help you eat your way around the world safely (and deliciously!).

Before You Go Trust me on this one – a little pre-trip homework goes a long way! I always start by diving into TripAdvisor reviews and local food blogs.

Pro tip: those expat Facebook groups are absolute goldmines for finding hidden gems where the locals actually eat. And while you’re at it, download some handy apps like The Fork (my go-to in Europe) or OpenRice if you’re heading to Asia.

Tips for Dining on your Overseas Adventure

If you’ve got your heart set on that amazing restaurant everyone’s talking about, don’t wait! Some of these places book up months in advance. Your hotel concierge can be super helpful with reservations, or use apps like Resy or OpenTable to lock things down.

Timing is Everything. Here’s something I wish I’d known earlier – meal times can be totally different abroad! In Spain, showing up for dinner at 7 PM basically marks you as a tourist. The locals don’t even think about dinner until 9 or 10! And here’s a money-saving trick: fancy restaurants often have amazing lunch specials that are way cheaper than dinner.

Staying Street Smart. Look, as much as we love adventure, safety comes first! I always scope out restaurants in well-lit, busy areas, especially for dinner. A quick Google Street View check before heading out can save you from ending up in sketchy areas. And always, always have a plan for getting back to your hotel – I keep local taxi numbers saved in my phone just in case.

Menu Navigation Made Easy. Don’t let a foreign menu intimidate you! Google Translate’s camera feature is literally a lifesaver – just point and shoot! Though I’ve had some hilarious translation fails, it usually gets the job done.

The Little Things That Matter. Remember to check if you need cash – nothing worse than finishing an amazing meal only to discover they don’t take cards! And please, please research tipping customs on WhereToTip. I still cringe thinking about the time I tried to tip in Japan (spoiler: they don’t do that there!).

Solo Dining Like a Boss Eating alone? Own it! Some of my favorite travel memories are from solo meals at the bar, chatting with friendly bartenders or other travelers. Bring a kindle or journal if you want, but don’t be afraid to just soak in the atmosphere.

When Things Get Iffy Listen to your gut (literally and figuratively!). If something feels off about a restaurant, it’s totally okay to leave. And while street food can be amazing, use your judgment – I always look for stalls with lots of local customers and high turnover.

The Fun Part! Join food tours early in your trip – they’re such a fun way to meet people and get the inside scoop on local cuisine. Plus, tour guides usually have fantastic recommendations for the rest of your stay.

Remember, some of the best travel stories come from those unexpected food adventures. That tiny restaurant down the alley might just serve the best meal of your life!
